Poets are the hierophants of an unapprehended inspiration; the mirrors of the gigantic shadows which futurity casts upon the present; the words which express what they understand not; the trumpets which sing to battle, and feel not what they inspire; the influence which is moved not, but moves. Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.

 

Come to the Carrot September 17th to celebrate Alberta Arts Days to see if he was right. Award-winning Saskatchewan writer Shelley A. Leedahl  will present her first multi-media project "Understory: Greig Lake Suite," a mélange of still photography, guitar, vocals, video and, of course, poetry. Leedahl has published eight books (poetry, novels, short fiction collections and the popular illustrated children's book, The Bone Talker), and is regularly invited to present in schools and other venues. She has received a number of national and international fellowships, and her poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction are frequently anthologized. Leedahl recently moved to Edmonton, and she would love to mingle with her new literary community.

September 8th is International Literacy Day. World-wide there are 759 million adults who have difficulty with literacy. In Alberta, 4 out of 10 Albertans struggle with literacy. In the Edmonton Capital Region, 400,00 people lack the literacy skills to function in everyday life. Due to reading difficulties, thousands of Edmontonians have trouble: understanding their prescriptions, helping their children with homework, filling out job applications, understanding banking and credit statements or qualifying for apprenticeship training. Those who need help reading need to know that there is help and they are not alone.

 

So widespread is the problem that Literacy leaders in the Edmonton region have united under the Literacy Works banner to draw attention to this sobering reality and raise awareness. Literacy Works is asking if you know any adult who needs help with reading, writing or math, and to tell them that there is help available: simply pick up the phone and dial 211 (the community service referral line).

 

Literacy Works is celebrating International Literacy Day by holding a Book Giveaway at the Clareview and Churchill LRT stations. Literacy Works and special invited guests (including Mayor Stephen Mandel) will be offering free books and bookmarks to Edmonton commuters. Book Giveaway is a fun way to promote the value of reading and raise public awareness.

Here is her note:


We wanted to make you aware that a number of cats have turned up dead in the middle of August. We cannot be sure that it is a poisoning as it would take an autopsy, but from talking to a vet, the symptoms appear to be poisoning. Neighbours with cats may want to keep them inside for the next week or so.

To date, five abandoned cats that we have had spayed and were getting domesticated have died, including three five month-olds. In addition, one of my own cats is also missing now.

We have contacted Animal Services and the police. They are aware that we may have a situation. If you see anything that may be out of the ordinary, please call the police complaint line at 780-423-4567.
